A milling machine manufactures high-precision parts by removing excess material from a workpiece using rotary cutters. The name of the machine comes from the milling process where a material is moved in line with the tool axis. These machines are versatile and have the ability to shape, slot, drill, bore and cut a variety of materials into different shapes and sizes. Most often these materials include metal, wood, brass and plastic.
This type of machine is available in both manual and automated varieties. The manual machine works by being manipulated along three axes, the x, y and z. The table, which holds the workpiece, and the saddle can move side to side along the x and y axes respectively by using hand wheels. The cutting tool is housed in the mill head and moves vertically along the z-axis through the use of the down feeder lever. Alternatively, the computer numerical controlled (CNC) milling machines are completely automated and follow the movement dictated by pre-programmed computer software.
Due to their precise nature, milling machines are utilised in many manufacturing industries. This includes automotive, transport, aerospace as well as general manufacturing, precision engineering, machine production and technology development.
