Level Sensor Buying Guide

Find and buy level sensors and gauges from verified suppliers on IndustrySearch. Level sensors and gauges detect the level of liquids or fluidized solids (eg granular materials), stored in a tank or vessel.

Things to consider when buying level sensors and gauges:

  • Know your application - Important factors to know before getting started are measured material properties, vessel or container dimensions and shape, level and volume measurement precision, minimum and maximum measured level height and operating temperature range.
  • Choose between point or continuous type - Point level type indicates whether the material in a vessel has reached a specific point, for example high or low level. Continuous type sensors monitor the level of material continuously or in small increments, for example to measure the amount of material currently in the vessel or tank.
  • Level sensor gauge operating principle - Common operating principles are:
    • Float - point type for liquids, detect level by coming in contact with the fluid’s surface
    • Tuning fork - point type mainly for solids, detect level by vibrating when coming in contact with the material.
    • Capacitance (staff) - continuous type for both liquids and solids, indicate level by coming in partial contact with the material.
    • Submersible - continuous type for liquids, indicate level by measuring the hydrostatic pressure of the liquid contained in a vessel.
    • Ultrasonic - continuous type for both solids and fluids, indicates level without contacting the material, by measuring the distance of the material level through ultrasonic waves.
    • Radar/laser - continuous type for both solids and fluids, indicates level without contacting the material, by measuring the distance of the material level through radar or laser waves.
  • Consider specialized application requirements - Specialized requirements include Safety Integrity Level (SIL) compliance, calibrated sensors for interface applications like oil on water, CIP/SIP requirements (Clean in Place / Sterilize In Place), specialized materials of manufacture and electronic remote connectivity options.
