The Chloride Penetration Profile Grinder is a precision tool designed to extract concrete powder samples by finely grinding at incremental depths, ensuring precise determination of chloride ion distribution. This equipment serves various purposes:
Laboratory Applications:
It aids in extracting concrete powder samples after subjecting specimens to chloride solutions, adhering to standards like NT Build 443 or ASTM C1556.
On-site Use:
It enables on-site assessment of structures for chloride ion ingress.
From the chloride ion profile obtained, the diffusion coefficient can be estimated as per ASTM C1556 or NT Build 443, facilitating estimation of remaining service life.
Operating Principle: A 18 mm diameter grinding bit delicately grinds concrete to powder at selected depth increments ranging from 0.5 mm to 2.0 mm. This bit, affixed to a grinding machine, is pressed against the surface by a grinding plate. Rotating the grinder within the plate removes circular sections of the surface. The grinding area is 73 mm in diameter with a maximum depth of 40 mm. Powder from each depth increment is collected using a battery-operated vacuum cleaner (Dust Buster) with a reusable filter for horizontal surfaces or in a plastic bag for vertical faces. Approximately 9 grams of powder is obtained for every 1 mm depth increment, with each sample taking 4 to 6 minutes to collect and about 5 minutes for chloride content determination using the RCT Kit.
Laboratory Testing: The Profile Grinder can be secured to horizontal and vertical surfaces using anchor bolts and clamping pliers. Additionally, a grinding bench plate facilitates profiling small laboratory-molded specimens or cores drilled from structures for diffusion testing.
Depth Accuracy: Depth increments are precise within ± 2%.
