HBM Plastics & Packaging Technologies -
Krauss Maffei of Munich, Germany - have worked in close conjunction with their customer Baumgarten Automotive Technics, GmbH, to produce the SP 3000 large plasticizing unit for freeflowing thermosets, which can be operated on all hydraulic CX Injection moulding machines.
Baumgarten Automotive are specialists in high-precision thermoset products, particularly for the automotive industry. The thermoset resins are the material of choice for engine compartments due to their outstanding properties such as dimensional stability, chemical resistance and temperature stability. The manufacturing of brake pistons from thermosets has become more popular among manufacturers and has exerted pressure on the prices.
Krauss Maffei worked with Baumgarten, and increased the cavity count to maximise productivity and reduce unit manufacturing costs. They use a 350 tonne KM 350-3000 CX DUR, fitted with a newly developed 80mm diameter screw enabling it to plasticize larger volumes and deliver higher shot weight. They can now operate with shot weights up to 1400 grams.
The key is the combination of the machine's precision closed loop control system, and the special screw design, which keeps shot weights constant and compensates for batch variants, which are inherent in the manufacturing process.
The screws outstanding wear resistant is achieved through a powder metallurgy (PM) process. This type of PM screw has around three times the wear resistance and hardness of conventional steel screws. It ensures that processing conditions remain constant for long periods of time and guarantees extremely stable processes and consistent product quality.
Krauss Maffei is a world leader in plastic pipe and extrusion manufacturing systems.
